Summer of sport lined up for residents at Thanet Coastal Festival
A major charity initiative is giving a healthy living campaign in Thanet a boost this summer to make it easier for local people to improve their lifestyles.
Motiv8 Sports has teamed up with the National Charity Partnership, a partnership between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Tesco, to help residents benefit from the month-long coastal festival.
Organisers of the Thanet Coastal Festival are encouraging people of all ages and ability levels to lead healthier and happier lives this summer by taking part in a string of activities offered by dozens of different clubs and organisations, ranging from sports teams to leisure businesses and gyms.
Hundreds of families are expected to try out new activities at events including: family fun roadshows and activities at Ramsgate Main Sands, Seashore Safari and Water Gala in Broadstairs, and taster sessions for Margate Masters Beach Volleyball, with many more encouraged to take up the chance of expert advice from healthy lifestyle advisors to achieve their goals.
The coastal festival launches on 2 August with a sports event including a one mile Family Fun Run. The National Charity Partnership – which is dedicated to helping people to reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease through healthy living - is giving Motiv8 Sports extra funding to host the Let's Do This Big Family Bike Ride to inspire more people to get cycling.
Matthew McKee, prevention programme manager for the National Charity Partnership, said the money will subsequently help to improve the health of Thanet’s community: “Eating too many unhealthy foods too often, a lack of regular exercise and being overweight is known to increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, as well as other conditions.
“Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease are both serious conditions which can be potentially deadly if left untreated. However, Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease are both largely preventable through lifestyle changes.
“We hope that by giving people more opportunities to get active, it will encourage them to think about their wellbeing and start making small changes towards better long-term health.”
The National Charity Partnership is running a campaign, Let's Do This, and has teamed up with Motiv8 Sports to support adults in Thanet reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease by taking small steps towards healthier lifestyles.
Sheena Maclean-Bel, from Motiv8 Sports added, “Motiv8 Sports are excited to be working with the National Charity Partnership to deliver another summer of fun packed beach sports for the local residents of Thanet, after the success of last year’s beach activities we are ready to welcome more Thanet families to join in in playing beach tennis, beach volleyball and many other beach based sport. Please come along to Margate Beach Courts every Monday to Friday throughout August.”
As well as funding events at the Thanet Coastal Festival to encourage more people to try new activities, the partnership’s online 8 Week Challenge encourages people to set and monitor health-related targets and helps them to stay motivated and achieve their goals.
